About Opalized
Opalized is an independent reference guide to gemstones and birthstones. We explain, in plain language, what each gem is, how it forms and where it's found, how to identify it, how it's valued, how to care for it, and the meaning and lore attached to it.
Why we built it
Buying or caring for a gemstone means wading through conflicting advice. Opalized distills gemological facts into short, consistent profiles so you can make an informed decision — whether you're shopping for a ring, checking a birthstone, or just curious about a stone you already own.
What each profile covers
Every profile opens with a quick grading card — category, Mohs hardness, birthstone, major sources, luster, and care level — followed by seven short sections:

Accuracy and sources
We aim for accuracy and keep value guidance deliberately general: prices vary widely with quality, and we always recommend a professional appraisal for significant purchases. Care guidance errs on the side of caution, because some stones are damaged by ultrasonic or steam cleaning.
